My First Blogging Award!

Liebster Award - Le Long Weekend

I’m thrilled to have accepted a nomination for the Liebster Award this week! The lovely Diana and Hope from MVMT Blog have acknowledged the work I’ve put into getting Le long Weekend up and running over the last couple of months, and I’m so grateful to them for my nomination.

Much like me, these ladies love getting away for weekends and are experts at getting the most out of destinations when you have limited time. Check out their 24 Hour Guides for your next stopover or weekend travel inspiration.

What is the Liebster Award?

The Liebster Award is all about supporting new bloggers. Only those with a following of less than 200 can be nominated. It’s a great way to build up a blogging community and connect with fellow bloggers from all over the globe! If you want to find out more, check out the official Liebster Award rules.

As part of the acceptance of the award, Diana and Hope have given me 11 questions to answer. Keep reading to get to know me a little better!

When did you take your first trip out of the country?

My first international trip was for my brother’s wedding in Canada. We visited Ontario, Manitoba and BC. It was an amazing trip – Canada made quite an impression on me! I was 18 at the time, and that trip firmly planted the seed for my travel obsession!

How many countries have you travelled to?

It’s funny, I’ve never really kept count of my own travels – but I do keep a tally for my son (the little globetrotter is up to 11 countries in his three years!). By a quick count, I’m at 21 – watch this space!

If you had to pick your top 3 favourite countries, what would they be and why?

Greece – I love everything about Greece. The food (I could eat dolmades and greek salad for the rest of my life!), the culture, the beaches, the weather! So far I’ve only explored Athens, Syros, Mykonos, Santorini and Crete – but I hope to add to that list soon.

France – Well obviously! I’m very lucky to be able to live in such a diverse country with so much amazing history and culture. I also love the weather (who doesn’t?), the wine and the architecture.

New Zealand – Another obvious choice. New Zealand lives up to its reputation of being one of the most picturesque countries to explore. It’s easy to get around, there is breathtaking scenery in abundance, and it’s a really easy place to live (she says in hindsight!).

Which city/country did you grow up in?

I grew up in Dunedin, in the South Island of New Zealand.

Which city/country are you based in currently?

I’m currently based in Saintes, France. It’s a small town just over an hour north of Bordeaux and 20 mins east of Royan.

The river Charente runs through Saintes, France – our new home.

How long have you been blogging?

I’ve been working ‘behind the scenes’ on my blog since May, but it’s only been live a little over a month!

What inspired you to start your blog?

I love travelling, and I love writing. It seemed like a natural thing to do! We had decided to relocate our family from New Zealand to France earlier this year, which meant we’d have more time and opportunities to travel around Europe. I’m also really looking forward to discovering more of France and sharing stories of the lesser known towns and villages we find along the way.

Do you travel full-time?

As a family, we make travelling a priority. After-all we moved to the other side of the world to be able to travel more! In saying that, we also enjoy having a home base. So our travel style is more about weekend adventures in France and discovering Europe slowly.

What’s the most important piece of advice you can give to new travellers?

I’m a huge advocate of travelling consciously. Which to me means thinking about the choices you are making in the destination, and what effect those choices have on the local people, the land and the animals. Basically, don’t just follow the crowd – use your head and vote with your wallet.

What three trips are at the top of your bucket list at the moment?

So hard to choose only three! Since moving back to the northern hemisphere I have a bucket list as long as my arm (and then some!). At a push I’d say Iceland, Lapland (Finland) and the Christmas markets in Vienna – yeah, this is my winter bucket list!

Iceland. Travel Blog

Iceland is high on my bucket list.

Where are you off to next?

Every weekend we’re out exploring our neighbouring areas – there is still so much to see within a couple of hour’s radius! A trip to the UK is on the cards in the next few weeks, and then after that, it’s time to tackle that bucket list!

I now have the opportunity to share the love and nominate some of my favourite new bloggers for this fun award.

A Pair of Passports

With a love of weekend escapes, dog-friendly adventures, and wine tasting, these guys are a travel loving couple after my own heart! They’ve set themselves a travel challenge “Around the UK in 80 weekends” and I can’t wait to follow along!

Your Next Big Trip

A full-time teacher, Clíodhna doesn’t let work get in the way of adventure. A firm believer in making the most of every opportunity, her tales of Africa will leave you wanting to book the next flight out!

Sarah CC Bence

An American living in the UK, Sarah is an adventurer, yogi and poet. She is an expert on travelling while gluten-free, and I’m enjoying reading about her escapades in England!

Zo Around the World

Zoe has an impressive travel resume for someone in her mid-20’s. An aficionado of off-the-beaten-track destinations, her budget travel guides will leave you wanderlust in no time!

A Travelling Bond

Erica isn’t letting being a mother slow her down. She is an expert on how to travel light, and on a budget with little ones in tow. Follow her on her upcoming adventure to Italy!

Loved reading your answers to our questions, Nadine! We went to Iceland last year at the end of November, and I would highly recommend Iceland in the winter. I agree with what the Norwegians say: There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes. Also, if you don’t like the weather in Iceland, just wait 5 minutes. 🙂

Hope you are loving your new home in France, and enjoy your travels!

Aw, this is so exciting! Thanks for the nomination & kind words, I’m looking forward to keeping up with your writing. I can’t believe Le Long Weekend has only been live for a month?!? I’m currently *trying* to learn French. I’ve been to Paris twice…unpopular opinion it wasn’t my favorite place! But I really would like to explore other parts of the country, so can’t wait to read about your trips!
